Scalers are used SUPRAGINGIVALLY but at times, may be inserted into a gingival pocket 1mm below the gum margin. As compared to curettes which are area specific, Scalers enjoy a bit of versatility that these can be used anywhere in the mouth where exploration of calculus and removal of debris is indicated.

Some descriptions use curettes and Scalers interchangeably. The final verdict is :blade design:. If it is sickle shaped and pointed, it is to be described as "Scalers".
