Round/ Spoon Discoid excavator |
The
excavators are cutting instruments with sharp edges, used with a
"scooping action". The excavators are used to remove carious
dentin, to carve the amalgam and direct wax patterns.
There are two basic shapes: round, spoon (discoid) and oval (spoon-shaped) the cutting edge extend all around the head, but the use of the oval Excavator is restricted by the depth of the back or bowl from about midpoint backwards. Head sizes vary considerably from 1mm to 2.5mm. Choice is the choice of the dentist. Most "European " patterns are discoid and most American patterns are oval spoons.
